SUBstituting with Preferred OPtions (SUB-POP) is an ongoing parallel arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) testing the effects of substituting sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) with non-caloric options on markers of cardiometabolic health. SUB-POP is enrolling adults with overweight or obesity who regularly consume sugary beverages to evaluate the effectiveness of substituting SSBs with non-caloric options in a real-world, un-blinded setting. Participants are randomized to (control) maintain SSB intake vs substituting with (i) aspartame-sweetened beverages (ASBs), (ii) Sucralose ASBs, or (iii) water.
